Abstract
1,200,267. Compensating for temperature variation in machine parts. WERKZEUGMASCHINENFABKIK GILDEMEISTER & COMP A.G. 30 April, 1968 [27 July, 1967], No. 20386/68. Heading B3B. In a machine tool such as a lathe, means is provided to effect the equalizing of the temperature of parts of the machine by the passing of coolant from one part of the machine to another. In the embodiment described a drive shaft 25 is supported in bearings in a drive housing 24 and is rotatable by way of gears 26, 27. A bush 30 extends from the housing and has therein thrust bearings 28, 29 which axially support the shaft 25. Surrounding the bush 30 and abutting the housing 24 is a further bush 32 which is recessed to provide an annular space 34 between the co-operating surfaces of the bushes. The inner bush 30 is made from a material having a high coefficient of thermal expansion, e.g. bronze, and the outer bush 32 is made of a material having a low coefficient of thermal expansion, e.g. Invar, whereby, when coolant from another part of the machine is passed around the annular space the inner bush 30 expands or contracts axially to a greater extent than the outer bush and hence moves the drive shaft 25 in an axial direction to an extent proportional to the movement of other machine parts.
