1,200,226. Making hollow-ware; stamping; rolling discs. ROTARY PROFILES ANSTALT. 15 Aug., 1967 [19 Aug., 1966], No. 37506/67. Headings B3A, B3M and B3Q. A method of drawing a hollow article from a metal sheet 54 comprises applying pressure to the central zone of the sheet and forcing rollers against at least one surface of the sheet in the peripheral zone to urge material from the peripheral zone towards the centre. Apparatus for performing the method comprises cages 24, 48 containing rollers 26, 46 which need not be pinned to the cages and the axes of which are inclined to radial lines passing through the rollers. As a punch 44 draws the sheet into a die 10, the cates are rotated in opposite directions by worm gears 21, 40 to reduce, or maintain constant, the thickness of the clamped margin. Roller bearings 20, 38 facilitate rotation of the cages. The process obviates the need for annealing, or reduces the number of annealings required. In a modification, the bore of the die, or the bore of the die and the surface of the punch or, Fig. 3, only the surface of the punch may be additionally lined with skewed rollers 62 which rotate with the punch for urging the material downwardly. These rollers 62 are in a cage fixed to the punch and assist in producing a wall of uniform thickness or of different thicknesses. An end pad 70 is supported by a thrust bearing 72.
