Abstract

1,200,190. Boxes and cases; closing bags. DIAMOND SHAMROCK CORP. 24 July, 1967 [26 July, 1966], No. 33898/67. Headings B8C and B8P. A self-supporting container formed of flexible thermoplastic foil material comprises an upright tubular body portion having polygonal panels each joined by its respective side edges to the side edges of the adjacent panels with reinforcing means extending along the junctions of the side edges, and a flat bottom closure formed from inwardly folded portions of the panels. An extruded tubular web, e.g. of polyethylene is passed between heated rollers 23, 24 which form a pair of sealed rigid ribs 25, printed if desired by rolls 27, and is then inflated and refolded to provide a second pair of parallel folded edges which are in turn heated to form a second pair of ribs. The web is then cut into container lengths and expanded to form a square body with a rigid rib at each corner, the bottom is folded in and heat-sealed to form a stiffening brace 43, the container filled, e.g. with milk, and the top folded in forming a handle portion 51, a foldable flap 52 being cut, folded over and heat sealed to provide a rigid brace. In a modification, Fig. 11. the corners are strengthened by inserted rods or tubes.
