Description

A bOTTLE CARF.IEz This invention relates to a bottle carrier. for example for ovine bottles or the like and to a blank for fabricating such a carrier, made for example from card or cardboard and adapted for the safe and comfortable transport of a bottle.
Accordiong to the invention, a bottle carrier comprises a substantially tubular body formed of side panels connected together along adjoining side edges, one end of the bod being closed by cooperating closure panels to form a base and the other, upper, end of the body being closable b means of scored fold lines provided in to of the side panels which define substantially triangular flank panels that enable the said side panels to be folded inwardly towards each other in opposition ad to be overlaid b two other opposing side panels ich form inclined sides to the corresponding upper end region of the body, the inwardly folded and scored triangular flank panels in use, and in cooperation with the inclined side panel portions, forming a substantially pyramidal region of the carrier body within which the neck portion of a bottle is nestable;; the cooperating side panels each have an aperture in a similar part of the said upper end region of the body, the apertures being located in such a manner that when the upper end panel regions of the carrier bod are folded to close this end, the apertures are in substantial aliment and a panel forming an extension of one of the inclined side panel portions is scored and cut to form a bridging closure member hich serves to connect the apertures in the opposing inclined side panel portions and close the associated end of the carrier body.
A blank for a bottle carrier in accordance with the invention comprises a generally rectangular sheet, the sheet being divided parallel to two opposed edges into four side panels, separated from each other b scored fold lines. the opposed free edges being connectable to one another to enable the blank to form a substantially rectandularly cross-section tubular body;; at one other edde of the sheet, one of the side panels has an extended portion which is provided with a plurality of scored fold lines and incisions. to define a closure panel, a side panel on either side of the extended panel being provided it an arrangement of scored fold lines which define a substantially isosceles-shaped triangle having an arcuate base and the apex of which touches the adjoining edge of an aperture provided in a predetermined area of the side panel and at a predetermined distance from the adjacent de of the sheet, a further scored fold line extending from the opposite edde of the aperture to the adjacent edge of the sheet, the remaining side panels also having apertures disposed in similarly predetermined locations to those of the panels having the trianaularly scored regions, the further edge of the sheet having mutually connectable closure panels.
An embodiment of the invention and a blank for its construction will now be described, by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bottle carrier.
Figure 2 is a view of the carrier from one side.
Figure 3 is a vie of the carrier from the adjoining side, Figure s is a partial-section along the line A-A of Figure 3 and Figure 5 is a blank form which the carrier is formed.
In ali the drawings, like reference numerals are used for like features.
As shown in Figures 1 to 3, the carrier consists of a substantially rectangular tubular body, closed at one end b suitably formed closure panels 4 to form a flat base region.
The carrier is for example made from card or cardboard and the base closure may be formed in an conventional manner.
The body consists of four panels, connected b scored fold lines, two of the panels, indicated by the numeral 2 in the drawings being essentially plain and the other two panels, 3 in the dralvin-s ain scored lines, the purpose of which will be explained below.
All four side panels have an aperture 6, located at a common distance from the upper edge of the tubular body of the carrier i and as can be seen particularly from figures 1 to 3, in the folded up condition of the carrier, the apertures 6 are generally coincident with each other.
One of the side panels 2 is extended at its upper edge in the form of a closure panel 5, separated and defined from its adjacent side panel b scored fold lines 8' and B''. The panel 5 also has a closure bridge portion 7, defined by the scored fold lines 7' and 8''' as ell as the incisions 9.
The to opposed side panels 3 are each provided with an arrangement of scored fold lines 11 and 12, which define a substantially isosceles triangular panel 10, the base of the triangle being arcuate as shown in Figure 3. The apex of the triangular area 10 touches one edge of the associated panel aperture 6 and from the opposite edge of the aperture a scored fold line 16 extents to the adjacent edge of the end of the bod.
To receive a bottle, the upper ends of the panels 2 and 3 are opened and the closure pallet 5 is extended. Once the bottle is inserted, the two panels 3 are brought towards each other b folding along the scored lines 16, the scored fold lines 11 and 12 enabling the areas 10 to be inclined inwards to form triangular flank panels. At the same time, the panels 2 are brought towards each other to overlie the inwardly folded end regions of the side panels 3, in such a manner that all the apertures 6 are in alignment to form a hole or passage extending completely through the end of the carrier body.
The closure panel 5 is then folded over the end of the body about the fold lines 8' and 8'' and the bridge portion 7 is pushed through the apertures 6 until the edge region outside the score line 7' projects beyond the outer face of the body. The incisions 9 enable the edges of the apertures 6 in the side panels to be engaged b the panel 7. in order to retain the upper end of the carrier closed and to provide a ore cortifortable handle-like formation by which the carrier and its contents can be carried.
As shown in Figure D. a blank for forming the bottle carrier 1 of this invention comprises a generally rectangular sheet of card, cardboard or like material, subdivided into four elongated rectangular side panels 2 and 3 b parallel scored fold lines. The free edges of the side panels C211 be connected in any convenient manner, for example a narrow edge strip 18 on one side that can be glued or otherwise fastened to the other free edge. One further side edge of the blank is provided with panels 4 which define an end closure formation.
At the other side edge 1 of the blank one of the side panels 2 is provided with an extended panel in the form of a closure panel 5.The panel 5 has scored fold lines 8' and 8''.
as ell as a further scored fold line 8' 2 connecting the ends of incisions 9, the fold line 8"' and the incisions 9 definino a panel 7 having an outer portion defined b a scored fold line '.
Each of the side panels 2 and 3 has a substantially rectan-dular aperture 6 located at a common distance from the edge 1 of the blank and the apertures in the side panels 3 each have a scored fold line extending from the ede 1 to the nearer edge 15 of the associated aperture 6. Each of the side panels 3 also has a substantially triangular area 10, defined by the scored fold lines 11 and 12 and in the shape of an isosceles triangle having an arcuate base. The apex of the triangular area touches the ed-de 14 of the aperture 6 opposite the line 16.
To form the carrier 1 of this intention, the four side panels 2 and 3 are folded about their scored fold lines and the flap 18 is secured to the opposite free ed-de of the blank to form a square tube. The flaps 4 are then folded together and secured to form the base of the carrier.
The upper end of the carrier is closed by foldinot the side panels 3 inwards along the fold lines 16, during this operation, the areas 10 are inclined inwardly and form flank panels defined b the lines 11 and 12, the arcuate form of the line 12 enabling the correct shape and rigidity of the flank panels to be achieved. As the panels 3 are folded inwards, the panels 2 are caused to be inclined towards each other to overlie the panels 3, with the four apertures 6 in mutual alignment.
The closure panel 5 is then folded rover the upper end of the carrier about the fold lines 8 and 8' , the panel 7 being inserted through the apertures 6 until the portion defined by the fold line 7' projects beyond the outer face of one side of the carrier. In this position, the edges of the apertures 6 on this side of the carrier engage in the incisions 9 to eep the end of the carrier closed.
