Abstract

[Also in Division F4] In a refrigeration system in which a compressor motor 9 is cooled by refrigerant from the high pressure side of the system, the flow of such refrigerant is normally restricted by a fixed orifice 35, but under low load conditions an orifice 37 is opened to allow increased flow. Refrigerant passes to the orifices from a point immediately upstream of a float controlled expansion valve 11 and is subcoolcd by passage at 19 through the evaporator 3. After passage through one or both of the orifices refrigerant is sprayed into the motor through nozzles 23 and is returned to the evaporator through a duct 25. An automatic valve 27 ensures that the pressure in the motor is slightly above that in the evaporator to prevent leakage of lubricant from the compressor 7 into the motor housing. Opening of the orifice 37 is controlled by a valve 39 which is biased by a spring 41 towards its open position and by condenser pressure towards its closed position. The condenser communicates through line 45 with the upper side of a diaphragm 44, the lower side of which is subject to valve chamber pressure through an orifice 47.
