Abstract
1,199,847. Change-speed control. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. 3 July, 1969 [3 July, 1968], No. 31778/68. Heading F2D. A four-position compound piston-and-cylinder type pneumatic servomotor for use in the gear shift mechanism of Specification 1,199,846 comprises an outer cylinder 4 having three ports 1, 2, 3 and in which an inner cylinder 5, closed at one end, is reciprocably mounted, the inner cylinder 5 in turn containing a reciprocably mounted piston 8 the piston-rod 10 of which is attached at 17 to a gear selector in an associated gear-box (not shown). In operation, the third port 3 is constantly supplied with fluid pressure such that for selection of 1st gear the ports 1 and 2 are cut off from the fluid pressure supply whereby the piston 8 is initially moved, by pressure at port 2 passing through slots 18 of the inner cylinder 5, against a stop 19 on the inner cylinder 5, after which the piston 8 and cylinder 5 are jointly moved by the port 3 pressure against the end 20 of the outer cylinder 4 at which position 1st gear is selected. Selection of 2nd is effected by connecting port 2 to the fluid pressure supply whereby pressure enters a groove 6, formed in the exterior or interior of the inner or outer cylinders 5, 4, respectively, and passes through a port 24 into a chamber 25 to move piston 8 against a circlip 26 in the inner cylinder 5. Selection of 3rd is effected by additionally connecting port 1 to pressure, whereby the cylinder 5 and piston 8 are jointly moved against the opposite end of the outer cylinder 4 as illustrated in the drawing, the fluid from the second port 2 maintaining the piston 8 against the circlip 26. Selection of 4th is effected by cutting off the fluid supply from port 2 whilst maintaining the supply to port 1 whereby the fluid supply from port 3 moves the piston 8 against the stop 19 in the inner cylinders 5. In use with the six forward speeds and reverse of the shift mechanism of Specification 1,199,846, one such servomotor as above is arranged to position the gear selector in any one of four positions, i.e. between 1st and 2nd, 3rd and 4th, 5th and 6th or opposite the reverse gear, and a second servomotor is arranged to move the gear selector to engage any one of each pair of gears on the single reverse gear.
