Abstract

1,142,506. Gear-shift actuator. CLAYTON DEWANDRE CO. Ltd. 30 June, 1967 [4 April, 1966], No. 14831/66. Heading F2D. [Also in Division F1] Three position piston and cylinder type pneumatic gear shift actuator, having a central " neutral " position and two end '' gear engaged " positions, exerts a low force over the first part of the piston travel from " neutral " to a " gear engaged" position to avoid overloading a synchronizing device, and a larger force over the remaining portion of said travel. A stepped piston 5 connected to a gear shift member has reduced portions 5a, 5b slidable into and out of bores of respective annular pistons 7, 8 which are slidable in cylinder 1, 2. The full diameter portion of piston 5 is slidable in a larger bore of piston 8, as is a reduced portion 7a of piston 7. If air is supplied to both ends of the cylinder, pistons 7, 8 are urged against a stop 9 to hold piston 5 in " neutral." If air is supplied only to end 2 of the cylinder, it acts only on reduced end 5x of piston 5 until reduced portion 5a is clear of piston 7. Then pressure acts on the full piston 5. For movement to the other " gear engaged " position, air is supplied only to the right-hand end of the cylinder. Ports 10 with check valves 11 allow air to escape from the spaces between pistons 5 and 7 or 8 during return from a " gear-engaged " position to the neutral position.
