The invention relates to compounds of the formula in which X denotes a halogen atom, A denotes a sulphur atom or a carbonyl group, n is 1 or 2, R denotes a halogenalkyl radical or an optionally substituted aromatic radical which may be attached to a heterocyclic radical and may contain bridge members and R<SP>1</SP> denotes (1) a halogen atom, (2) an optionally substituted aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, (3) a radical of the formula -COOR<SP>2</SP>, -COSR<SP>2</SP> or -CON(R<SP>2</SP>)R<SP>2</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> denoting a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, aromatic or heterocyclic radical, or (4) a radical of the formula -CX 3 , -COCl or -C(Cl) = NCl. The compounds are prepared by reacting a cyanic acid ester of the formula R(OCN) n with a halogen compound of the formula X-A-R<SP>1</SP> at about - 20 to 250‹ C., optionally in an inert organic solvent. Many suitable starting materials are specified. Products of the invention may be of the formulµ R(O-C(Cl) = N-OCl) n , R(O-C(Cl) = N-S-COCl) n , R(OC(X) = N-S-CX 3 ) n , R(O-C(Cl) = N-S-C(Cl) = NCl) n , R(O-C(X) = N-CO-R<SP>1</SP>) n and R(O-C(X) = N-CO-CO-YR<SP>11</SP>) n , in which R<SP>11</SP> together with N denotes a heterocyclic radical.
