Abstract

119,957. Bettinger, M. Dec. 27, 1917. Torpedo screens.-A torpedo screen is formed of one or more series of pivoted steel arms or bars connected to hydraulic rams. The arms g are connected to bars f pivoted at e to brackets d capable of sliding in dovetail guides c. The hydraulic rams i are attached to a plate b fixed to brackets d<1> sliding in guides c<1>, and are connected to the arms through links o and bars n. A spring w is arranged between the head of the cylinder and the ram. When a torpedo strikes the arms g they turn about the pivot e, the spring being compressed and the ram forced inwards. This movement operates a slide valve p, through the bellcrank q and projections s, s<1>, and feeds water to the ram to move the arms outward again and so deflect the course of the torpedo. According to the Provisional Specification, springs may be used in place of the hydraulic rams.
