A photo electrically scanned film controls a stepping motor which actuates switches controlling an electronic system which influences electro magnets controlling the actuation of pawl and ratchet mechanism adapted to be operated by continuously rotating cams so as to selectively actuate instrumentalities in the machine. The needle cams and yarn guides can be controlled in this manner.
