Abstract

1,199,394. Shell moulds and cores, moulding machines. R. H. BARROW. 7 Feb., 1968 [27 Feb. 19671, No. 6153/68. Heading B3F. Moulds and cores having a thin shell facing are prepared by covering the surfaces of a heated pattern with a dry resin coated granular medium, heating the medium to harden it into a thin non-self-supporting shell having an average thickness of less than 1/8 inch and removing any unhardened medium, curing the shell while still in contact with the pattern and applying a second moist binder-coated medium having a coarser grain size than the first medium to form a rigid backing for the thin shell, the second medium being set by heat from the pattern. Moulding machines.-In Fig. 1, a two-part core-box 17 is rotatable about 180 degrees around a horizontal axis. Dry-moulding mixture is supplied from a hopper 38 to a magazine 27 which is moved under a blower-head 33 to deliver the mixture to the core-box. After setting the core-box is rotated about 180 degrees to deposit excess moulding mixture into a hopper 25, and then rotated to its original position. A second magazine 28, containing moist moulding mixture, from a hopper 39, is brought above the core-box and the charge blown into the core-box. After setting, the core-box halves 17a, 17b are opened by a fluid motor 21 to allow the completed core to be removed. In Fig. 2, the first medium is delivered by compressed air from below the corebox and the second medium by gravity and compressed air above the core-box. The machine, on wheels 55, is reciprocated between the first and second mixture blowers by a fluid motor 56.
