Abstract

1,199,286. Electrically released switches. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. 27 Nov., 1967 [13 Dec., 1966], No. 55692/66. Heading H1N. A thermally operable self-cancelling switch includes a plurality of bimetallic elements heated sequentially to determine the overall operating period of the switch. Operating member 15 is biased to the open position shown in Fig. 1, by spring 26 and carries two bimetal arms 28, 29 formed with latches at their lower ends. Arms 28, 29 are in electrical contact with spring 26 through rivet 27 mounting spring 26 and arms 28, 29. Fined contact 21 is formed with two catches 22, 23 on its upper surface. To close the contacts, member 15 is moved clockwise so that the latch on arm 29 latches behind catch 22. The circuit is then completed through fixed contact 19, spring 26, rivet 27, bimetal arm 29 and fixed contact 21. As the current flows, bimetal 29 heats up and bends to one side freeing itself from catch 22 so that spring 26 urges member 15 towards the open position but before the movement is completed, the latch on bimetal 28 engages catch 23 so that the circuit is again completed between the fixed contacts through bimetal 28. Bimetal 28 heats up and bends to one side freeing itself from catch 23 so that spring 26 completes the movement of member 15 to the open position. When the switch is in either of the contacts closed position, the switch can be opened manually by depressing member 15 against the pressure of two springs 18 which support the bearing posts 16 of member 15 to move the latches on bimetal arm 28, 29 below the catches 22, 23 to free bimetal arms 28, 29 and allow spring 26 to pivot member 15 to the open position. In a modification in place of springs 18, bearing posts 16 are supported by a plate hinged at one end and supported by a spring at the other end.
