Abstract

Delivery apparatus; associating-apparatus; cutting-apparatus.-A web-cutting machine, particularly for use in connexion with a printing-machine is provided with cutting means adapted to operate on two or more webs while arranged side by side or on adjacent longitudinal portions of a single web, and to cut sheets of one length from one web or web portion and sheets of another length from the other web or web portion. Separate folding-mechanisms are provided for the shorter and longer sheets respectively. In the form shown, one half of the width of the web x is cut into sheets of half the length of those into which the other half is cut, by means of a pair of transverse cutting cylinders 11, 15 provided with two pairs of detachable shearing knives 13, 16, and 21, 24, the pair 21, 24 extending throughout the width of the web x and the pair 13, 16 extending only half way across. A rotary slitting disk 31 may be provided to slit the web longitudinally or separate side by side webs or sheets may be fed to the cutting cylinders 11, 15. The severed sheets are forwarded by one or two sets of disks 38, 40, and 50, 52 having cut-away parts to ensure prompt release of the tail end of the sheets. One set or a part of one set of these disks mav be rendered inoperative by setting them with their cut-away parts adjacent to each other and disconnecting them from their shafts, or the disks may be withdrawn from contact with the sheets by the operation of screws 57, 60 connected to the bearings of their shafts. The shorter sheets are taken by grippers 107, 108, 109 on a cylinder 105 and transferred as single sheets or as a group of collected sheets to a longitudinal folding apparatus comprising driven folding rollers 111 and an oscillating cam operated folding blade 116, and the folded sheets are deposited in a container 115. The longer sheets are talen by grippers 72 on a cylinder 70 and are trai sversely folded either singly or in a collected group, by a folding blade 75 and folding jaws 82, 83 on a cylinder 80. The folded sheets may be delivered directly to a pocketed conveyer 100, or may be led to a longitudinal folding apparatus comprising a pair of folding rollers 90 and an oscillating blade 94. The sheets may be slit longitudinally by slitters 79 co-acting with the cylinders 80 or 70, and the severed sheets conducted to corresponding longitudinal folders arranged side by side.
