Abstract

1,198,889. Golf practice device. T. W. GENTRY. 5 Dec., 1968 [23 Jan., 1968], No. 57763/68. 'Heading A6D. A golf practice device for practising the proper golf swing comprises an elongate grip member I, tension means for continuously exerting tension on a flexible cord 4, alignment indication means connected to the grip member 1 for indicating improper movement during the golf swing, which indication means consists of a rigid rod 2 whose ends are connectedto the free end of the cord 4 and to a socket member 3 at one end of the grip member 1 respectively, and means for permitting the rod 2 to rotate about this end of the grip member only in a predetermined path in which the cord 4 and rod 2 remain in a straight line. The tension means comprises a preferably substantially constant tension spring reel 5 which is mounted on a wall 6 as shown and on which the cord 4 is wound. The rod 2 is cylindrical and is formed with a ball 20 on one end which is rotatably retained in the socket 3. The means for determining the path of the rod comprises two slots formed in the end of the socket member, which slots are of a width slightly greater than the diameter of the rod. One slot is so arranged that when holding the grip member 1 as if addressing a ball 7, rod 2 lies in this slot, any improper movement causing the disalignment of the rod 2 and cord 4, and the resulting torque due to the tension in the cord tending to rotate the grip member to its correct position. The second slots, is similarly arranged for the top of the backswing, and throughout the swing any misalignment of the rod and cord due to improper movement is corrected.
