Abstract

1,198,476. Preparation of perhalopyridines. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 April, 1968 [22 May, 1967], No. 23669/67. Addition to 1,004,375. Heading C2C. Perhalopyridines having the formula where n is 1 to 5 are prepared by heating a perfluorochloropyridine having fewer fluorine atoms in the molecule than the desired product, or pentachloropyridine with a dry alkali metal fluoride in a polar, aprotic, liquid, organic reaction medium at 180-250‹ C., the volatile reaction products after leaving the reaction medium being continuously condensed and returned thereto at a point below its surface. An example is given of the preparation of pentafluoropyridine and monochlorotetrafluoropyridine from dichlorotrifluoropyridine by reacting it with potassium fluoride in tetramethylene sulphone.
