Abstract
1,198,259. Acrylate bonded laminates. SUN CHEMICAL CORP. 8 June, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 26565/67. Heading B5N. [Also in Divisions B2, C3, D1 and G2] Laminating adhesives comprise a photopolymerizable composition, which is curable in the presence of oxygen and comprises 15-89% by weight of a photopolymerizable monomer selected from polyacrylate or polymethacrylate esters of ethylene glycol, triethylene glycol, tetraethylene glycol, tetramethylene glycol or trimethylolpropane; 1-25% by weight of benzoic or a derivative thereof as photo initiator; and 10-84% by weight of a film-forming component selected from unsaturated alkyd resins, conjugated drying oils, oil-modified alkyd resins, aryl sulphonamide - formaldehyde resins, epoxy resins, urea-formaldehyde resins, cetyl vinyl ether and diallyl phthalate prepolymers. The preferred monomers are trimethylolpropane triacrylate and trimethacrylate. The compositions may also include chain transfer agents, e.g. glycol mercaptoacetate, ethyl mercaptoacetate, triethanolamine, t-butyldiethanolamine, neohexene, cyclohexene, cyclooctene or d-limonene; heat-stabilizers, e.g. diethylhydroxylamine; and also plasticizers and lubricants. At least one of the surfaces to be laminated must be translucent to U.V. light, and suitable combinations include regenerated cellulose film-regenerated cellulose film, treated polyethylene film-treated polyethylene film, polyethylene terephthalate film-metal substrate (e.g. copper), and regenerated cellulosepolypropylene. The adhesives can be cured by exposure to U.V. light. -
