Abstract
1,198,245. Mercury cathode electrolytic cells. KYREHA KAGAKY KOGYO K. K. Jan. 20, 1969 [Jan.19, 1968], No.3062/69. Heading C7B. In an electrolytic cell for preparing alkalis using a mercury cathode, which comprises side walls 3, end-walls (12) and a bottom plate 2, e.g. of iron, and means to cause mercury 11 to flow in the form of a thin layer on the surface of the bottom plate, the surface of the bottom plate is provided with longitudinal grooves 5 substantially parallel to the direction of flow of mercury and closely adjacent to the side walls, and with auxiliary longitudinal grooves 7 parallel with the side walls and at a distance of 1 to 10cm from the surface of the side walls. If a longitudinal anode support 4, parallel to the side walls is present, grooves 6 are positioned adjacent thereto and auxiliary grooves 8 a distance of 1-10 cm therefrom. The inner surface of the walls may be coated with insulating material, e. g. fluorinated resin. Mercury may be supplied to and withdrawn from the cell via ducts (9) and (10) Fig. 1, (not shown) lying adjacent the end-walls of the cell.
