Abstract
1,198,102. Purifying ferrous metals. NIPPON KOKAN K.K. July 25, 1967 [July 28, 1966(2)], No.34047/67. Heading C7D. [Also in Division B1] Molten ferrous metal containing S and/or P is refined by pouring it into a vessel, adding the appropriate refining agent and then mechanically stirring the melt only in the region of the surface thereof, (e.g. in the top third of the depth thereof), the addition and stirring being accomplished while the molten mass is still in motion from the pouring. The stirring means comprises at least one elongated stirrer which will reach no more than one third of the metal depth into the molten metal, with the portion thereof intended to be immersed in the melt preferably having a cross section in the form of a cross, triangle, circle, Y shape, square or ellipse. The stirrer may be driven eccentrically and may be perpendicular, or at an angle, to the surface of the melt.
