Abstract
1,198,047. Diffraction plate. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 18 March, 1969 [21 March, 1968], No. 14172/69. Heading F4R. A light fitting comprises one or more grooved light deflecting plates of synthetic resin wherein the plate is provided on one or both sides with one or more spiral grooves not more than 0À1 mm. deep, the walls of adjacent grooves associated with the same spiral intersecting each other approximately at the surface of the plate. The angle of the groove is preferably acute and more than 80 degrees whilst the angle between the bisector of the groove angle and the projection of the plate surface varies along the spiral (Fig. 7, not shown). Light from source 14 passing through deflecting plate 11 emerges at equal angles r. The plate is provided with a non-grooved section 15. Two spiral-grooved sections may be provided on one side which may intersect each other to give a kind of MoirÚ effect. The plate may have a mirrorcoating on either the plane and/or ridged sections. The plate may be curved by pressing after formation of the grooves and the mirror coating. In an embodiment the groove is 0.048 mm. wide and 0.015 mm. deep and may be modulated. The plates are made in the same way as phonograph records, e.g. by stamping or using beeswax moulds.
