Abstract

1,197,806. Coloured polymers. BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK A.G. 3 Nov., 1967 [4 Nov., 1966], No. 49997/67. Heading C3P. [Also in Divisions B2 and D1] Coloured copolymers are prepared by copolymerizing an unsaturated dye of the formula with at least one uncoloured comonomer wherein, in the formula, X denotes an acryloyl, methacryloyl or ethacryloyl group which is attached directly or via an intermediate member to R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> or the benzene nucleus A, R<SP>1</SP> denotes an unsubstituted or substituted C 1 -C 8 alkyl, cycloalkyl, aralkyl or aryl group and R<SP>2</SP> denotes a hydrogen atom or an unsubstituted C 1 to C 4 alkyl group, provided that R<SP>2</SP> does not contain more than 4 carbon atoms, or R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> are connected with the adjacent N atom to form a 5-7 membered saturated ring, and the benzene nucleus A may bear one or more additional substituents. Uncoloured comonomers specified are styrene, butadiene, isoprene, vinyl chloride, vinylidene chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, C 1 -C 8 alkyl esters of acrylic, methacrylic or maleic acid, vinyl esters of C 2 -C 18 alkane carboxylic acids, C 1 -C 4 alkyl vinyl ethers, acrylic, methacrylic, maleic or itaconic acid, acrylamide, methacrylamide, vinylpyridines, N-vinylimidazole, N-vinylimidazolium methylsulphate, N-vinylpyrrolidone, N-vinylcaprolactam, divinylbenzene, diallyl phthalate, glycol diacrylates and mono-acrylates, and N- methylol-acrylamide or -methacrylamide and their C 1 -C 4 alkyl ethers. Copolymerization may be effected in bulk, solution, dispersion, suspension or emulsion, using free radical initiators such as potassium persulphate, hydrogen peroxide, benzoyl peroxide, cumene peroxide, azodiisobutyronitrile and redox systems. The copolymers may be used as pigments, for the production of mouldings, film and sheeting, in lacquers and paints and also, when crosslinkable, in binders for laminated articles and for finishing textiles, leather and paper.
