Abstract

1,197,572. Electro-osmosis; semipermeable membrane and electrode. MARSTON EXCELSIOR Ltd. Aug.30, 1967 [June 7, 1966], No.25220/66. Heading C7B. [Also in Divisions B1 and 2] A semi-permeable membrane which can be used as an electrode in electro-osmosis in desalination of water comprises porous base layer 1, for example of a glass fibre cloth on a perforated Ti plate or Ti wire mesh 2, porous metallic carrier layer 4 supported on the base layer, and a plurality of solid particles 5 carried within the poree of the porous metallic layer. Layer 4 may be of sprayed-on titanium or titanium alloy; particles 5 may be of polytetrafluoroethylene. The carrier layer may be impregnated with an alkaline suspension of particles 5 and the dispersion flocculated in situ with acid. The membrane may be heated to sinter the plastics particles, optionally with application of fluid pressure. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the glass fibre cloth 1 is removed from its support plate 2 and a second porous metallic layer 4 applied to its underside before the impregnation step.
