Abstract

[Also in Divisions B3, F2, G1, G3, H1, H2 and G4] An electromagnetically operated positioning device includes a head member which can be moved over the surface of a plate member by the selective energization of electromagnetics positioned along two axes (see Divisions H1 and H2). A member 11 is caused to move over the surface of a plate member 10 along two axes by selective energization of electromagnets positioned along each axis. Ferromagnetic plate 10 is grooved orthogonally to provide a grid of square ferromagnetic teeth 16 with spaces 15 between the teeth filled with plastics material to give a smooth surface. The member 11 has enclosed within casing 46 at least two E-shaped magnetic cores with coils 34 and grooved pole. pieces 32 secured on the core legs, the cores being disposed at right angles to each other. In operation the coils are sequentially energized from a ring counter circuit so that a locating or traversing force is applied to member 11. Preferably as shown two pairs of parallel magnetic cores 27, 29; 28, 30 are used to reduce turning moments on member 11. Attached to the casing of member 11 is a tool carrier 57. The device may be used in a chart plotting device when a sheet of paper 20 is laid on plate 10 and held by a vacuum applied through holes 22 and can be used horizontally or vertically. Alternatively the member 11 may be fixed and the plate used to support a workpiece in a machine tool where the tool is held in member 11. The member may carry an engraving tool for use on non-magnetic metals.
