Abstract

The components of insulated cable or wire scrap are separated by fragmenting the scrap by means of a smashing or cutting device and continuously conveying the fragmented scrap to a gravity separator to separate the metallic from the non-metallic component of the scrap, the rate of movement of the fragmented scrap between the smashing or cutting device and the separator being adjusted so that substantially no accumulation or storage of the fragmented scrap occurs between the device and the separator. As shown, the scrap is fed to a smashing or cutting device 2, such as a hammer or milling cutter, by means of an endless conveyor 1. The fragmented scrap is discharged onto an endless conveyor 4 whereby it is dropped into a gravity separator 6. Pneumatic and magnetic devices 3, 4 arranged above the conveyor 4 serve to separate, respectively, particles of light material, e.g. dust and paper, and ferrous components from the scrap. The separator 6 contains a liquid having, for example, a density of 2 grams per c.c., so that the non-metallic components of the scrap, e.g. plastics materials, are floated - off while the remaining (non-ferrous) metallic components sink and are removed from the separator by a conveyor therein which carries the components upwardly and discharge them into a further gravity separator 7. The floated-off non-metallic components are discharged on to a sieve 12 for washing and subsequent discharge into a conveyor 13. The separator 7 contains a liquid having, for example, a density of 2.8 to 3 grams per c.c., so that light metal components, e.g. of aluminium, are floated off and discharged into a sieve 10 for washing and subsequent discharge onto a conveyor 11, while the heavy metal components, e.g. of copper and lead, sink and are discharged by a conveyor onto a sieve 8 for washing and subsequent discharge onto a conveyor 9. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a further smashing or cutting device (14), is interposed between the discharge end of the conveyor 4 and the separator 6 and is preferably equipped with rotary blades for shearing the fragmented scrap into smaller sections.
