Abstract
1,196,811. Damped resilient couplings. FRANCAISE DU FERODO S.A. 7 Feb., 1968 [8 Feb., 1967], No. 6135/68. Heading F2U. In a clutch plate having a resilient connection providing limited angular displacement between a friction-lined plate 16 and a flanged hub 10, the displacement initially involves compression of a set of relatively weak springs 23 followed by compression of a set of stronger springs 31 damped by friction-washers 30, the springs 31 being located radially outwardly of springs 23. As shown, springs 23 are retained in apertures 24 in the hub flange 11 by a backing washer 16A on plate 16, and a counter-plate 18, said plates being secured together by studs 19. The ends of springs 23 are engaged by arcuate thrust members 25 located on either side of the flange 11 and connected to plates 16, 18 by pegs 26. Surrounding the members 25 is a pair of annular plates 12 secured together by studs 13 so as to clamp friction-washers 30 against the flange 11. Clearance holes are provided in the flange and plates 16, 18 for the studs 13 and in the flange and plates 12 for the studs 19. The springs 31 are located radially outwardly of the friction washers in apertures 32, 33, 34 in the flange 11, plates 12 and plates 16, 18 respectively, being pre-stressed in apertures 32 and having an initial clearance in apertures 34. On application of torque to the discs 16, 18, therefore, the springs 23 are first compressed by the thrust members 25 until the clearance between openings 34 and the springs 31 has been taken up whereupon these springs also begin to act. At the same time, the studs 19 engage the edges of the clearance holes 21 in plates 12 and bring the friction washers into operation. To reduce shock on reversal of torque, three of the openings 34 may be dimensioned so that in the reverse direction, their respective springs 31 come into action after the other three springs.
