Abstract
1,196,748. Digital measurements. JOHNSON, MATTHEY & CO. Ltd. 24 June, 1968 [10 July, 1967], No. 31656/67. Heading G4H. [Also in Division G1] A dimension of a body is compared with a known dimension of a standard body by moving a radiation beam of small cross-section over the dimensions in turn and comparing the times taken for the beam to move over the two dimensions. A beam of light from a source 1 is scanned across a standard wire 4 and a fixed or moving test wire 5 by a mirror drum 2. The square waves produced in photo-cells 3, 3a by interruption of the beam are amplified at 6, 6a, clipped at 7, 7a and used to open gates 8, 8a which pass pulses from an oscillator 9 to the " count up " and "count down" inputs of a counter 10. The number on counter 10 represents the deviation of the diameter of the test wire from the standard. The counter is calibrated by making a number of scans across the standard wire and equating the mean count to the known diameter. In a modification cells 3, 3a are replaced by a single cell and a switch operated by drum 2 segregates the standard and test pulses. The source 1 and drum 2 may be replaced by a C.R.T. flying spot scanner. The gates 8, 8a and counter may be replaced by a C.R.T. display of the pulses from cells 3, 3a. Ultra-violet infra-red or X-radiation may be used instead of light.
