Abstract

1,196,675. Charging zinc-oxygen secondary batteries. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 6 Oct., 1967 [10 Oct., 1966], No. 45795/67. Heading H1B. A charging assembly comprises a zinc-oxygen battery in which the electrolyte compartment of each cell is divided by a porous separator 15 into an anolyte compartment 13 and a catholyte compartment 14, and an electrolyte circuit for supplying electrolyte having a lower zincate content than the anolyte to the catholyte compartment 14 and for withdrawing electrolyte from the catholyte compartment 14. As shown in Fig. 3 the electrolyte circuit supplying zincated aq. KOH to catholyte compartment 14 comprises an electrolyser 20 to remove zincate and deposit zinc from the electrolyte coming from and being supplied to the catholyte compartment 14 adjacent oxygen cathode 11, heat exchanger 21 and gas remover 22. The anolyte is also circulated via heat exchanger 31 and zinc source 32. In other embodiments the anolyte circuit is omitted or replaced by an outlet conduit containing a valve connected to the outlet conduit 17 enabling some or all of the circulating electrolyte to pass from compartment 14 via separator 15 and through compartment 13 (Figs. 1 and 2. not shown). Similarly the embodiment of Fig. 3 can have conduits 38, 17 joined via a valve so that electrolyte can pass through separator 15 into compartment 13 from compartment 14 (Fig. 4, not shown).
