Abstract
1,196,509. Dichloroacetyl chloride. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 18 Sept., 1968 [20 Sept., 1967], No. 44288/68. Heading C2C. Dichloroacetyl chloride is obtained by oxidizing trichloroethylene with oxygen or an oxygen-containing gas at 50‹ to 250‹ C., at atmospheric pressure or above, in the presence of 20 to 2000 p.p.m. of an azo compound and 30 to 1000 p.p.m. of a secondary or tertiary amine, the azo compound having the formula where each R is a hydrogen atom or a cyano, -R1-CO-NH 2 , carbalkoxy or C 1-6 alkyl radical or two adjacent R groups complete an alicyclic ring, R<SP>1</SP> being a covalent bond or a C 1-6 alkylene radical, and the amine being a secondary amine with up to 12 carbon atoms, a tertiary alkylamine with up to 18 carbon atoms or a tertiary arylamine with up to 14 carbon atoms.
