Abstract

119,648. Reed, V. Z., (Assignee of Day, D. T.). Sept. 28, 1917, [Convention date]. Mineral and tar oils, extracting.-Oils and other hydrocarbon products are extracted from shales, coal, &c. by treating the shale &c. prior to destructive distillation with the vapours, which may be partially condensed, obtained by the distillation process, and in the presence of an acid added or obtained by distillaton. The condensation of the vapours is completed in passing through the shale, and the hot condensed liquid dissolves part of the oil &c. from the shale, and this is separated from the solid material prior to the feeding of the material to the distillation retort. As shown, the shale is fed by a band 3 to a retort 1, and oil vapours &c. are fed into this retort by a. pipe 14. The shale is preferably treated before entering the retort 1 with a spray of hydrochloric or sulphuric acid from a sprayer 2. The condensed oils &c. pass down through the shale and are passed through screens 6, 7, to a conduit 5 with a liquid seal. The shale with part of its oil &c. dissolved is passed to a retort 8 being fed through the same by a screw conveyor. The retort 8 is. heated in an oil or gas furnace 9, and may be supplied with superheated steam from a generator 18 and superheater 19. The coke is discharged down a shoot 11 where it may meet tar delivered through a pipe 16 in order that the two may be heated together to crack the tar. The gaseous products are led away by pipes 12, 13, 14 and tar products may be run off by a pipe 15 instead of being led through the pipe 16. Uncondensed gas passes through a pipe 14. Specification 123,415 is referred to.
