Abstract

1,196,267. Rear view mirrors. DESMO Ltd. 14 Nov., 1968 [15 Nov., 1967; 20 April, 1968], Nos. 51971/67 and 18790/68. Heading B7J. In a rear view vehicle driving mirror having a head 22 which can present images of different brightness according to the angle at which the reflected light is observed and an arm 10 secured to a base-plate 11 by means 12, 13 permitting the arm to break away under impact, a carrier 17 pivotably mounted at 20, 21 on flanges 15, 15, of a channel section end portion 14 of the arm 10 adjustably mounts the head 22 by a dome and socket joint, and a member 37 having a finger grip 38 and including a helical groove 40 engaging a lug 43 on the carrier is pivoted on the portion 14 so that the carrier may be moved to either one of two limiting positions defined by engagement of the grip 38 and the corresponding flange 15. A spring 45 urges the carrier to one of the limiting positions. The carrier pivot 20, 21, the dome and socket joint, and the point of engagement between the member 37 and carrier 17 may occur in any order along the carrier. The means 12, 13 is described particularly in Specification 1,196,266. In a modification, Figs. 3, 4 (not shown), the relative dimensions and shapes of the arm and carrier are altered so that the carrier acts as an arm for the mirror head and the arm is reduced to a bracket plate secured to the base-plate and having the carrier arm and manually operable member pivotably secured thereon. In another embodiment, Fig. 6, a toggle linkage is formed by a leaf spring 66 engaging in slots 65 in each flange of each of a channel shaped carrier and a manually operable channel member to give an over-centre snapping movement limited by engagement between the surface of the spring and the appropriate sides of the slots 65. In a modification, Figs. 7, 8 (not shown), a bar across the end of the manual member engages in a parallel side slot in the carrier against the action of a spring, to give an overcentre movement limited by engagement of the appropriate end of the carrier with the web of the channel in the arm.
