Abstract

1,196,100. Beam defining diaphragm. VARIAN ASSOCIATES. 6 Nov., 1968 [24 Nov., 1967], No. 52587/68. Heading H5R. An apparatus for defining the width of a beam of radiation comprises a pair of metal jaws having opposed facing surfaces, at least one of the jaws being movable and pivotally connected to two non-parallel shafts by means permitting the jaw to slide along the shafts, the angle between the shafts being such that the facing surface of the jaw is maintained parallel to the edge of the beam defined by the jaw over a range of beam widths. The apparatus is illustrated by Fig. 2 wherein jaws 38 are both movable along skew shafts 58 and 28 on pivotable collars 68 and 40 respectively. A drive means e.g. sprockets 80, 82 and chains 78 may be fitted to move the jaws along the shafts which in the particular embodiment is accomplished by threading the ends of shaft 28 with threads 35 of opposite hand supporting the shaft on end bearings 32 and centre bearing 36 so as to rotate and attaching a pivoting bush 40 suitably threaded to each of the blocks 38 whereby rotation of the rod either separates or closes the jaws, the inclination of the jaws with respect to the beam being governed by the angle between the shafts 28 and 58 and the distance between the points of attachment of bushes 40 and 68 on the blocks 38. If desired each or the jaw may be connected at opposite sides to two pairs of non-parallel shafts when the two threaded shaft may be coupled, e.g. by sprocket and drive chain, so as to rotate synchronously. As is indicated in the drawing both jaws may be mounted for movement. Preferably as shown one shaft 28 serves two jaws and the other two support shafts 58 are skewed in opposite senses with respect to the single shaft. The arrangement of the facing surfaces may be defined if desired as being such that the facing surface of the or each movable jaw is coplanar with the emission point of the radiation beam.
