The strength of a solution of a cationic or anionic surface active agent is determined using a closed but openable container containing a known quantity of a standard solution of a .surface active agent of opposite .type to the surface active agent to be determined, an organic solvent immiscible with the standard .solution, and a coloured indicator which on addition of the solution under test is taken into the organic solvent phase or into the solution phase according to the type of surface active agent in excess in the solution phase. The organic solvent and indicator may be chloroform and methylene blue; also mentioned are carbon tetrachloride and bromophenol blue. A kit comprises a contamer as above and a hypodermic syringe.
