Abstract
1,195,792. Travelling-wave tubes; electromagnets. HUGHES AIRCRAFT CO. 20 Feb., 1968 [21 Feb., 1967], No. 8214/68. Headings H1D and H1P. An electron beam-focusing solenoid and its leads, e.g. for use in a travelling wave tube, are arranged in such a manner as to minimize the production of transverse field components at the solenoid axis. The solenoid is formed by a metal foil wound between, and having its respective end turns conductively secured to, the non-magnetic tubes 22 and 28, adjacent turns being separated by an interleaved insulating tape, and connection to the solenoid being made by a lead 38 connected to a surrounding ferromagnetic tube 34 mounted upon the inner tube 22 by ferromagnetic end-pieces 30 and 32, and by a plurality of symmetrically disposed leads, e.g. 42, 44, passing radially through a corresponding plurality of equi-spaced apertures 46, 48 in tube 34 to contact tube 28. Lead 38 is preferably connected to a ring 36 secured to the ferromagnetic tube 34, as shown, to increase its circumferential conductance. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 5, not shown), the leads 42, 44 are in the form of coaxial cables passing axially through a symmetrically disposed array of apertures formed in the end disc 32.
