Abstract

1,195,591. Printing plates; type members. F. M. LOPEZ. 15 Aug., 1967 [22 Aug., 1966], No. 37402/67. Heading B6C. A type member for a type-setting method in which a series of members each bearing a transferable graphic sign on an individual support portion are placed in juxtaposition comprises a support portion having location-indicatiing means and with attachment means to secure the member to a further type member and/or to an intermediate or final support on which a series of members are to be assembled. In a preferred form the location-indicating means comprise at least one closed frame, or a cross-ruling or linear pattern. The type member 1 of Fig. 1 comprises a support portion bearing on its obverse face a transferable letter of the alphabet g. The member has a location-indicating frame 3a, 3b, 4a, 4b. The distance dl between the lines 3a and 3b is exactly the same in all the members and corresponds to the point measurement of the type while the width d2 of the type member, between the two lines 4a and 4b may vary in accordance with the particular graphic sign borne by the member. Additional location marks are shown at 5 and both the obverse and reverse faces of the member has adhesive material 6, 7. The adhesive areas 6 on the obverse face are used to position the member upon a support backing whilst the similar areas 7 on the reverse faces may be used for picking-up the member with a composing tool or used to remove the member after the transfer of the text from a temporary transfer support to the final support. In the manufacture of a printing-plate each type member is stuck to the plate either directly or from a transfer (decalcomania).
