[Also in Division C3] # - Carbamyl - # - hydroxyethylamine derivatives of the general formula wherein A denotes a #-carbamyl-#-hydroxyethyl radical of the general formula wherein R<SP>4</SP> denotes hydrogen or a methylol or alkoxymethyl group having up to six carbon atoms, R<SP>1</SP> denotes, when n is zero, a hydrogen atom or a hydroxyl or alkylol group or the radical -N(R<SP>2</SP>) 2 or the radical R 2 , or when n denotes an integer, the radical R 2 ; R<SP>2</SP> denotes the radical A, a hydrogen atom, an alkyl group, an alkylol group or an alkoxymethyl group having up to six carbon atoms, R 3 denotes an alkylene group having two to twelve carbon atoms and n denotes zero or an integer, the compounds containing at least two radicals A, may be obtained by reacting a glycidic amide of the formula with an amine of the general formula wherein at least one of the radicals R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> denotes a hydrogen atom. The reaction may be effected in an aqueous or alcoholic solution, with or without a solvent, at 30-80‹ C., and products containing N-methylol or N-methylol ether groups may have such groups introduced into the molecule subsequent to the above reaction by treating an intermediate derivative with formaldehyde or with formaldehyde and an alcohol. The products may be used as complexforming agents for heavy metal ions, e.g. Fe<SP>+</SP> <SP>+</SP> <SP>+</SP>.
