Abstract

1,195,209. Holder for toothbrush or razor. MITSUBISHI DENKI K.K. 2 Oct., 1967 [1 Oct., 1966], No. 44687/67. Heading A4V. [Also in Divisions A5 and H5] A cabinet contains a U/V sterilizing lamp and provides a housing for an electrically operated appliance, e.g. a toothbrush or razor, which contains a rechargeable battery as its electrical power source, the housing being provided with a socket into which the appliance is inserted, such insertion simultaneously activating the sterilizing lamp and attaching the appliance to a current supply to recharge its battery, the housing having a window for observing the energizing of the lamp from outside the housing. In Fig. 2 the cabinet 10 comprises a chamber 12, the floor 14 of which contains a hole 26 into which the applianceillustrated as a dental handset 110, is inserted, a subsidiary support 28 carrying a contact 32 having terminal 33, 34 of correct polarity to co-operate with the corresponding contact on the appliance and initiate charging of the battery. Insertion of appliance 110 by depressing sliding contact 53 closes spring switch 50 and activates lamp 46 via mains lead 40 and ballast resistance 48. Mains lead 40 which is connected to a standard AC current supply by plug 44 is also connected via transformer 36 and rectifier 38 to the connector 32, the voltage being stepped down to produce suitable charging parameters. The front of the housing is constituted by an L-shaped door 17 hinged at 18 and releasably fastened at 24 to the housing, door 17 preferably being made of a material which is transparent to visible light but impermeable to U/V light. The fact that the U/V source is visible outside the housing means that the operation of the charging circuit is effectively monitored. The beam of the U/V lamp is directed mainly downwards so as to prevent the escape from the housing of any great amount of U/V radiation when the door 17 is opened.
