Abstract

1,195,193. Jointing by stamping or forging. HYDRAUL FITTINGS Ltd. 2 June, 1967 [2 June, 1966], No. 25672/67. Headings B3H and B3Q. A crimping or swaging machine comprises a carrier for dies 22 disposed radially of the carrier-axis, and a cam 28 with a frusto-conical surface 42 for closing the dies on to a workpiece upon axial relative movement between the cam and carrier, the carrier being axially divided into two parts 7, 8 of which part 8 is pivotable so that the carrier may be opened along its length for lateral access to its workreceiving bore. The machine may connect an elbow fitting (32), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the end of a hose (33) by swaging a sleeve (34) about the hose or, after changing the dies, perform a crimping operation. In one embodiment radial passages for the dies are located between the ends of the carrier, which is mounted on a vertical plate 4. The upper part 8 is mounted on a pivot 14 and locked to the lower part 7 by a spring-loaded catch 10 which is releasable by turning a handle 17, further movement of the handle turning the upper part 8 about its pivot 14. Guide-rods 22, 23 support the cam 28 during movement by an hydraulic cylinder unit 39, 40, and an adjustable abutment 45, connected to the cam by rods 43, engages another vertical frame member 36 to limit the swaging stroke. With the die-carrier open, assembled workpiece may be introduced into the tool through an axial opening in member 4. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the diepassages are formed in the end face of the carrier, as described in Specification 1,195,192, to which reference is made. The dies project beyond the end face of the carrier and engage a divided keeper ring (29) bolted to the end face, or they may be of T-section if the keeper ring is to be omitted. In another construction (Fig. 3), the carrier has a side chamber (35) to receive an angle fitting, and spring-loaded ball-catches (25) for limiting movement of the dies.
