Abstract

1,194,359. Preparation of polyolefins. VEBACHEMIE A.G. 24 Nov., 1967 [24 Nov., 1966], No. 53604/67. Heading C3P. α-Olefins are solution polymerized using a catalyst obtained by reacting an organometallic, preferably organoaluminium, compound with a mixture of transition metal compounds in the presence of boron trifluoride to cause the transition metal compound to be reduced, and then reacting this product with at least one organo-metallic compound. The transition metal compound is employed in quantities less than 5 mg. per litre of solvent, and the organometallic compound is employed in quantities of from 0.2 to 4 gms. per litre of solvent. Preferred transition metal compounds are of titanium and vanadium. In the examples, (1) ethylene is polymerized using a catalyst comprising a mixture of aluminium triethyl and a reaction product formed from TiCl 4 and VOCl 3 with aluminium triethyl in the presence of BF 3 , (2) propylene is polymerized using aluminium tri-n-butyl and a reaction product formed from TiCl 4 , and VOCl 3 with a mixture of di-isobutylaluminium chloride and an aluminium trialkyl in the presence of BF 3 , (3) ethylene and propylene or 1-butene are copolymerized using aluminium tri-n-propyl and the reaction product of (2). The polymerizations may be carried out in the presence of hydrogen.
