Abstract

1381605 Granular polyolefins SUMITOMO CHEMICAL CO Ltd 29 Dec 1971 [29 Dec 1970] 60577/71 Heading C3P Polyolefin granules are prepared by polymerizing an olefin in the presence of a liquid polymerization medium and a catalyst comprising (a) a main catalyst component insoluble in the polymerization medium and supported on spheroidal particles 1 to 1000Á in diameter of a high molecular weight compound, the supported main catalyst component being insoluble in the polymerization medium, and (b) an unsupported organometallic compound at a pressure of not more than 100 kg./cm.<SP>2</SP> and a temperature below the melting point of the product polymer and of the carrier. The main catalyst component may be TiCl 3 , ZrCl 4 , VOCl 2 , VCl 3 , V 2 O 5 , chromium chloride or oxide, or ammonium metavanadate and (b) may be an organometallic compound of Na, Ba, Mg, Zn or Al. In the examples ethylene and propylene are homo- or copolymerized in the presence of hydrogen in heptane using as (a) the reaction product of V 2 O 5 with phosphoric acid which is subsequently treated with nbutanol and supported on polyethylene, polypropylene, polyvinyl chloride or starch, T 1 Cl 3 supported on polyethylene or polypropylene or VCl 3 supported on polypropylene and as (b) diethylaluminium chloride, ethyl aluminium sesquichloride or triethylaluminium and the product polymer is mixed with methanol and HCl to leach out the catalyst residues.
