Abstract
1,194,320. Benzophenone derivatives. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. 2 April, 1969 [4 April, 1968], No. 17374/69. Heading C2C. Dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, tert.-butylformamide or dimethyl sulphoxide, or a mixture thereof, is used as a solvent in a process of making a benzophenone derivative of the formula in which R denotes a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy, carbalkoxy or hydroxy group, R 1 and R 2 denote hydrogen or halogen atoms or alkyl, alkoxy, carboxy or carbalkoxy groups and R 3 denotes an alkyl group, from a benzophenone derivative of the formula in which R, R 1 and R 2 are as defined above or one of R 1 and R 2 may be hydroxy. The process is effected by refluxing a reaction mixture containing an appropriate polyhydroxybenzophenone, an alkyl halide of 1-20 carbon atoms and an acid-binding agent in one of the specified solvents and recovering the alkylated product. The reaction may be catalysed by a metal bromide or iodide, and a small proportion of sodium hydrosulphite may be added to the product, before it is separated, to improve its colour. The examples describe the manufacture of 2-hydroxy-4-octyloxy-, 2,2<SP>1</SP>-dihydroxy - 4 - octyloxy -, 2 - hydroxy - 4 - methoxy-, 2 - hydroxy - 4 - dodecyloxy - 4<SP>1 </SP>- tert. - butyl and 2 - hydroxy - 4 - butoxy - benzophenones.
