Abstract
1,193,925. Steel manufacture. TUBOS DE ACERO DE MEXICO S.A. and TECHINT ENG. CO. Inc. May 16, 1968 [May 19, 1967], No. 23429/68 Heading C7D. [Also in Division F4]. Granules of iron obtained by direct reduction of iron ore are charged into an electric arc furnace for the manufacture of steel, the granules being injected into the central zone of the furnace between the electrodes at a rate controlled to ensure that they are melted as soon as they are added to the furnace. As shown in Fig. 3 granules are fed from a vibrating chute 10 to the hopper 14 of a feed mechanism, the vibration of the chute being adjusted to give the required feed rate. The granules fall from hopper 14 into a casing containing a bladed rotor which projects the granules through tangential outlet 13 and through feed pipe 9 which passes through an opening in the side wall of furnace 1. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the bladed motor is driven from an electric motor (17) through a slip clutch (18) to prevent damage to the feed mechanism in the event of the casing (12) becoming clogged. To this same end the casing has a cover (15) resiliently urged downwards by springs (16).
