Abstract
1,193,866. Polyamides. TOYO BOSEKI K.K. 7 June, 1967 [11 June, 1966; 3 Feb., 1967], No. 26195/67. Heading C3R. In a continuous process for manufacturing linear polyamide filaments by (a) hydrolytically polymerizing monomers, (b) purifying the resulting intermediate polyamide in a vacuum chamber, (c) simultaneously or subsequently effecting further polymerization in the molten state under reduced pressure and (d) discharging and melt-spinning the polyamide water and/or alcohol vapour is separately introduced into the vacuum chamber of step (b) so as to maintain therein a partial vapour pressure thereof between 2 and 500 mm. Hg. The vapour may be pre-heated and may be mixed with an inert gas. Specified alcohols are C 1-3 alkanols, glycol, glycerol and benzyl alcohol. Specified polyamides are nylons 6, 7, 9, 11, 66 and 610 and polyxylylene adipamide. Additives which may be present during the polymerization are various organic or inorganic P, Mn, Co, Zn, Ca or Mg compounds. Four forms of apparatus are illustrated in three of which the vapour is introduced in countercurrent along a screw through which the melt is removed from the vacuum chamber while in the fourth it is introduced through a rotating hollow shaft near the bottom of the chamber. The filaments are suitable for tyre cords or fishing nets. Reference is made to Specifications 1,042,229 and 967,807.
