Abstract

An apparatus for producing deformed portions in sheet material includes means adapted to continuously move the sheet longitudinally past a deforming station at which there are provided co-operating rotatable deforming elements and means to intermittently move said elements in position to act on said sheet at said station to deform the sheet to form therein a desired configuration of deformation which is elongated in the direction of movement of the sheet. An apparatus for carrying out the method comprises two rollers 13 and 14 supported in bearings 12 in the side members 10 of a roll stand. The lower roller 13 is driven by a motor 11 and the upper roller 14 is movable vertically in the frame towards and away from the lower roller. The lower roller comprises a shaft 15 to which the roller 13 is keyed, the roller having circumferential grooves 18 corresponding in shape to the corrugations required. The upper roller comprises an outer tubular member keyed to a shaft 19 and having deep parallel-sided grooves, in each of which is an annular member 21, the bore of the annular member being larger than the diameter of the roller at the bottom of the recesses. Above the roller 14 are brackets 26 which support rollers 24, the brackets being attached to a beam 27, connected by rods 28 to a second beam 29 which is guided for vertical movement by posts 34. Above the second beam 29, a fluid cylinder 31 is fixed on a cross-member joining the side members 10 and the piston-rod 30 of this cylinder is pivotally attached to two links 29a. Each link 29a is pivoted to the lower end of one of two short vertical links 36, the upper end of each link 36 being pivoted to the roll stand. The common pivot pin of each pair of links 29a, 36 is mounted in a block 29b which is constrained to slide along the beam 29, so that the connection between the beam 29 and the cylinder 31 is a form of toggle linkage. Operation.-A sheet to be corrugated is passed between the rolls 13 and 14 and is firmly gripped by the cylindrical surface of the rolls. The brackets 26 are then lowered so that the annular members are forced to protrude into the recesses 18 and shape the sheet by stretch-forming. The parts of the sheet between the corrugating members are held flat by the grip of the rollers. The brackets 26 and backing rollers 24 are raised periodically as the sheet passes through the machine to provide alternate corrugated and plain sections of the sheet. The forming members may be replaced by cutting discs which slit the sheet. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown) the upper roller comprises a tubular outer member having raised annular portions on its surface which co-operate with circumferential recesses in the lower roller.
