1,193,770. Yeast. FORSCHUNGSINSTITUT FœR DIE G€RUNGSINDUSTRIE ENZYMOLOGIE und TECHNISCHE MIKROBIOLOGIE. Dec. 12, 1968 No. 59045/68. Heading C6F. The continuous culturing of yeast e.g. for use in the production of alcohol by fermentation, is effected in a two-stage culture system, the first stage of which operates aerobically with a mash supply of low extract content and, if desired, with filtered and sterilized distiller's spent wash (stillage), and the second stage operates anaerobically with a separate mash supply of high extract content and with discharge from the first stage, and at least a part of the discharge from the second stage is recycled to the first stage. The single second stage as such may be replaced by a plurality of anaerobic stages sequentially connected and a part of the discharge from one or more of these is recycled to the first stage. Of the discharge from the first stage, part is fed to the second stage and the remainder may be sent directly to a continuous alcoholic fermentation process.
