[Also in Division H2] In a milling machine, a work-piece 2 and tool 6 are adapted to be driven along perpendicular axes by D.C. motors X, Y, respectively, means being provided for determining a set angle of cut. In one arrangement, the motor X is connected to the mains to drive the feed table 3 as well as a three phase generator A which has synchronizing connections with a motor A1. The latter is coupled through gearing W with a three phase machine B<SP>1</SP> which acts as a generator and has synchronizing connections with a motor B driving the tool carrier 7. In this case, the D.C. motor Y is not connected to the mains. In this manner, the table 3 and tool carrier 7 are moved at a predetermined speed ratio in relation to each other, the angle of cut being determined by the transmission ratio of the gear W. Other angles of cut may be obtained by reversing the motor X, or by arranging that the machines A, A<SP>1</SP>, for example, rotate in opposite directions. In addition, the motor Y may be operated as the main drive, a change-over switch U being actuated so that machine B is connected to machine A<SP>1</SP>, and the machines A, B<SP>1</SP>, are interconnected for synchronous operation. The gearing W may be replaced by a gear train associated with clutches for varying the transmission ratio in accordance with a programme which is set by cam-operated switches.
