Abstract

[Also in Divisions B5 and C3] A compression mould e.g. of wood, metal or plastics, for the production of ceramic or cement 'based products e.g. bricks, is provided with increased wettability at the moulding surface thereof by an intgral layer containing a finely divided hygroscopic material in a synthetic resin matrix to facilitate release of the moulded article from the mould and the application to the moulding surface of a dressing layer, e.g. of sand for incorporation into the surface of a brick and which also acts as a release coating. The hygroscopic material comprises powdered silica gel or wood flour and is preferably applied to the moulding surface by spraying in a liquid vehicle comprising a synthetic resin solution in a volatile solvent which is allowed to set .by evaporation of the solvent. Alternatively, the hygroscopic material e.g. wood flour with a nitrocellulose resin/solvent vehicle, may be incorporated into the resin forming the moulding surface of a plastics mould as in a glass reinforced polyester mould. Examples are given of compositions suitable for spray application comprising, (1) wood flour, cellulose nitrate and mixed acetone/toluene/ ethanol/isopropyl alcohol/thinner. Alternatively the liquid vehicle may comprise a nitrocellulose dope incorporating an alkyd gum, dibutyl phthalate and cellulose thinner of butyl acetate/ethyl acetate, butanol, acetone, toluene/ xylene. For a harder surface, a cold setting melamine resin may be used either as the liquid vehicle or as a constituent thereof. The metal moulds are preferably aluminium or stainless steel or a ferrous metal provided with a cadmium plated surface.
