Abstract

1,193,242. Production of glyoxal. LEUNAWERKE WALTER ULBRICHT VEB. 9 Jan., 1968, No. 1241/68. Heading C2C. Glyoxal is prepared by causing a methyl sulphinyl carbanion to act on a substituted formamide of the general formula HCONR 1 R 2 in which R 1 and R 2 represent alkyl groups with 1 to 4 carbon atoms or aryl groups. This reaction is preferably carried out at a temperature between - 20‹ and + 70‹ C. and the methyl sulphinyl carbanion may be produced by reacting sodamide or sodium hydride with dimethylsulphoxide. The glyoxal is formed dissolved in an organic solvent which may be dimethylsulphoxide itself or tetrahydrofuran, and may be used in this form in a number of reactions, or may be isolated as its bisulphite compound in a crystalline form. In Examples 7-9 a glyoxal solution in dimethylsulphoxide so produced is reacted with ammonium acetate and benzil, diphenylbenzil or p-tolil to produce 4,5,4<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP> - tetraphenyldiimidazyl - 2,2<SP>1</SP>,4,5,4<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>- tetradiphenyldiimidazyl - 2,2<SP>1</SP> or 4,5,4<SP>1</SP>,5<SP>1</SP>- tetra - p - tolyldiimidazyl - 2,2<SP>1</SP> respectively.
