Abstract

1,193,195. Toughened polyvinyl aromatic compositions containing petroleum jelly. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 26 Aug., 1968 [12 Oct., 1967], No. 46544/67. Heading C3G. A composition comprising a toughened polyvinyl aromatic compound prepared by polymerizing a vinyl aromatic monomer in admixture with an elastomer is prepared by forming a blend of said toughened polyvinyl aromatic compound and a lubricant additive comprising at least 13%, by weight of the total composition, of (a) a petroleum jelly or (b) petroleum jelly and not more than 40%, by weight of the petroleum jelly, of a mineral oil. The said lubricant additive may be incorporated during a polymerization stage in the manufacture of the polyvinyl aromatic compound. The composition may contain an alkanolamide, e.g. lauric diethanolamide. In the examples, petroleum jelly is blended with a toughened polystyrene formed by interpolymerization of styrene with a butadiene-styrene rubber or polybutadiene. An example is given of polymerizing styrene in the presence of butadiene-styrene rubber, petroleum jelly and white oil.
