Abstract

1,192,920. Cellular particulate inks. MOLINS MACHINES CO. Ltd. 25 Aug., 1967 [31 Aug., 1966], No. 38843/66. Headings C3C, C3P and C3R. [Also in Division C4] An ink consists of solid particles each of which is cellular. The particles, which are preferably of 5-30 Á, are prepared from a resinous binder, a colorant, and either a soluble solid which may be leached out to create the voids, or a blowing agent. In one preparative process a solution of the binder, colorant and blowing agent in a solvent is dispersed in a liquid non-solvent for the binder, the dispersion is heated to volatilize the solvent of the solution, soften the binder and activate the blowing agent, and the cellular particles are separated from the non-solvent liquid. In another process a solution of the binder, colorant and blowing agent is spray dried in air or another gas, e.g. a polyamide solution in chloroform containing Waxoline Red is spray dried in air at 100-120‹ C. using a blowing agent, such as the morpholine salt of nitro-urea, which is activated at 60-80‹ C. Examples disclose cellular solid inks derived from compositions as follows:-(1) "Versamid" 940 (Registered Trade Mark-polyamide resin), chloroform, "Waxoline" Red O.S. (Registered Trade Mark), a solution in methanol of the morpholine salt of nitro-urea, and methanol and spray dried; (2) TiO 2 , "Piccolastic" A75 (Registered Trade Mark-polystyrene blend), methylene chloride, water, and nonyl phenol ethoxylate surfactant and spray dried; (3) "Piccolactic" A75, pale solid coumarone resin, pale liquid coumarone resin, TiO 2 , "Waxoline" Red O.S. chloroform dispersed in glycerol and heated; (4) "Versamid" 940, toluene, i-propanol, spirit black, dicyandiamide in acetone + water and spray dried.
