Abstract

Solid matter which is dispersed in a liquid medium is coagulated by adding to the dispersion a branched-chain polymer which is soluble in the medium of the dispersion and which has a number of reactive positions and a strong affinity for the dispersed solid; the separate particles of the solid become encapsulated in the polymer. A polyfunctional cross-linking agent is also added to the dispersion, and is allowed to react with the polymer. The precipitate formed is firm and relatively resistant to the effects of stirring. It is in the form of large, easily separated flakes or agglomerates.
