Abstract

1192828 Super-conductors; transformers CENTRAL ELECTRICITY GENERATING BOARD 11 Nov 1968 [11 Aug 1967] 37073/67 Headings H1A A5 and A4D A super-conductor in contact with a normal metal is provided with a surface layer having a lower thermal conductivity than the conductor to reduce any tendency for film boiling, as opposed to nucleate boiling, to occur in the liquid coolant. The surface layer may be porous and comprise sand stuck to the surface with glue. The surface of the conductor may be coated with glue, plastics material or varnish which may either be allowed to set or may be covered while still tacky with copper filings, loosely packed cotton wool, ceramic particles, abrasive grit, or silicon-carbide or graphite powder. Alternatively, the super-conductor may be wound with spaced turns of cotton thread and partially covered with paint. The surface layer may also comprise a coating of a metal such as stainless steel or a nickel-chromium or copper alloy. The super-conductor material may be niobium-titanium alloy or niobium stannide and the normal metal which it contacts may be copper. The super-conductive wire may be utilized in electromagnets and transformers.
